Politics is the topic of nightly news, social media and talk radio and local Young Democrats are looking to catch the wave.
Bobby Watkins is trying to organize high school, college students, and young professionals aged 18 -35 to serve the party.
“We are trying to get it up and running here in the county,” said Watkins. “We are an off branch of the central Democratic committee.”
Group activities aim at getting the party message out by campaigning and bringing donations into the party coffers.
“We help host fundraisers, voter registration drives, get the word out, go door knocking, do everything we can to help the Democratic Party in the county,” said Watkins. “We are focused toward the general election.”
As Watkins pointed out the benefits of belonging.
Beefing up your resume with volunteerism and rubbing elbows with politicians may open doors in the future.
“The best thing about being in the party with Young Democrats is that you connect with other people that have the same beliefs as you do,” said Watkins. “Getting to go to state convention you get to meet some really cool people in government and politics like Senator Keith Ingram.” Anyone at the high school or college level can get letters of recommendation for volunteering with a specific campaign.”
Watkins started circulating fliers, and plans on setting up a Facebook page to drive events and meet-ups.
