MHS Drama takes Hamlet ‘post-hardcore’

Show plays pair of per-formances tonight, tomorrow at MPAC

ralphhardin@gmail.com For you hepcats not in the know, post-hardcore is a genre of music that is derivative of the hardcore punk music revival of the late 90s and early 2000s — think My Chemical Romance, Sleeping With Sirens or Pierce The Veil.

Now take that style of music and attitude and blend it with William Shakespeare’s classic “Hamlet,” and you get, of course “Hamlet: Post-Hardcore.”

And that’s just what the Marion High School Drama Department will bring to the stage tonight and tomorrow evening at the new Marion Performing Arts Center.

“Hamlet: Post-Hardcore” will open at 7 p.m. at the MPAC. The show is a oneact version of “Hamlet” that is updated for a modern audience. Denmark is turned on it's end when the a young man's father suddenly dies and his uncle marries his mother. Hamlet must solve the mystery of his father's death to avenge his foul and most unnatural murder.

Tickets are $5, and may be purchased at the door or online at http://www.marionarpac. com/events.html.

The cast of the one-act play will also take the show on the road, representing Marion High School Theatre at the State Festival in Russellville Feb. 12 and 13. The cast includes Randle Hardin as Hamlet, Ashton Spence in a dual role as Ophelia and Horatio, and Ethan Underhill who plays Laertes.
