Hughes native, sci- fi star to appear this weekend

news@theeveningtimes.com

Movie buffs and sci-fi fans will remember, Michael Beck, a Hughes native best known for his roles as Swan in cult classic “The Warriors,” as Dallas in the campy action flick “Megaforce,” or the trippy Olivia Newton-John movie “Xanadu.”

The actor’s film career peaked in the 1980s, but he has continued a steady stream of roles on television, including turns on hit shows such as “In the Heat of the Night,” “Murder She Wrote,” “Walker, Texas Ranger,” and staying true to his sci-fi pedigree, “Babylon 5” and a reprise of his Swan character in the “Warriors” video game adaption.

Beck will be among those appearing at the Tennessee Comic Con this weekend at theCook Convention Center in Memphis. Also appearing with Beck will be Memphian Jon Bailey from the popular “Honest Trailers” online video series.

'We can't wait to bring our show to Memphis,' said Greg Hanks, co-owner of AVC Conventions, the company behind the event.

This is the first event in Memphis for AVC Conventions, he said, but hopefully not the last. Tennessee Comic Con is a celebration of popular culture and is set for Saturday, Feb. 6 and Sunday, Feb 7 at Cook Convention Center. Tickets are $15 per day or $25 for the weekend. Kids under eight can purchase tickets for just $5 per day.

Jim Hall will be on site doing commissions and signings.

In addition to the special guests there will be a costume contest, gaming, and fan groups.
