We will make it work

It is a well-established fact that most people do not like change. It is also well established that the only way we can grow, have more, or do better is to have some form of change in our lives. Today I want to talk about one of those changes that affects me, but being the positive person that I am, I am going to make the most of it.

A front-page article in our local daily newspaper in the Weekend Edition of Nov. 2 and 3, titled “Log Cabin Democrat announces changes,” outlined some needed and necessary changes that, beginning the week of Nov. 14, will be taking place in this publication.

At this time, they will deliver a “printed” paper on Wednesday and Saturday and shift to an eedition for Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. This move has become necessary because of rising costs – the same costs that affect us every time we fill up our car with gasoline or go to the grocery store. They determined that this move would allow them the option of not increasing subscription costs, at least for the foreseeable future. Of course, if you are a regular reader of my column, you know that it has always run on Friday and has done so since 1995. That’s 29 years of continuous service to the readers of this fine newspaper.

As you may know, the newspapers of America have gone through some tough times over the past few years. In fact, more than 2,500 newspapers have gone out of business since 2004, as more and more people are getting their news from electronic sources, smart phones and the like. It is here, with your permission,

that I would like to talk about the value of the local newspaper.

The Log Cabin Democrat has been around since July of 1879 and has served us well. There is just a ton of local news every week that we can only get from our local newspaper, such as sporting events, obituaries, marriages, and things of interest to us here in Conway that others could care less about.

Did I mention that local advertisers use the Cabin to let us know about specials they are running this week?

You may know that Conway is now the fastest growing city in our state, and one of the fastest growing in the nation. Having a great newspaper is very important to all concerned.

It will take a little while to get things sorted out, but soon it will be just a bump in the road. If you don’t have email, call the Conway Corporation and get it set up so you don’t miss an issue.

I will confess that most young people know much more about email, smart phones, Facebook and all the rest than I do, but I am learning.

When I found out about the changes the Cabin is making, I just said, “We will make it work” and we will. You know, “It’s your attitude and not your aptitude that will determine your altitude.” To God be the glory.
