Who Are You?
‘Time in the Word’ By Clayton Adams
“Who Are You?” The superstar rock group The Who made this song famous and many people recognize it as the theme music for the television show “CSI.”
The story, depending on which version you ascribe to, is supposedly about Pete Townsend, drunk and sleeping in a doorway is awakened by a policeman who said to him, “You can go sleep at home tonight if you can get up and walk away.” Pete, in a drunken stupor and angry, reportedly looks up into the sky and asking the rhetorical question of God, “Who Are You?”
Eternity is incomprehensible to the human mind.
Yes, we have a concept of eternity but how can humans, who have limited understanding and knowledge truly know eternity?
Only through faith in God can we have a true understanding of eternity.
God said, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end” (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
I have visited many people who have told me they do not believe in God and when they die, that is the end, that there is no life after death. This has never bothered me, after all, God has given us the ability to choose and to believe what we want to believe (Deuteronomy 30:1516, Joshua 24:15, Matthew 10:38-39, Romans 12:2). I know that inside every person (even the one who does not believe in God, thinks about eternity and what will happen after this physical life has been completed).
Everyone asks the question about God, “Who Are You?” Who are you? God’s answer about who He is and who we are in His book The Holy Bible.
Our identity was stolen in the Garden of Eden by Satan. Satan was careful to craft and display the bait no human can resist – the chance to “be like God…” (Genesis 3:5) Using their God given senses of sight, sound, touch, smell and taste, Adam and Eve reached for and ate the forbidden fruit. Adam and Eve made a wrong choice and so do we. It is through lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh and pride of life that Adam, Eve, you, me and everyone else fall prey to.
All the temptations we deal with come in one of three ways. Lust of the Eyes (it looks appeals to us). Lust of the Flesh (it feels good, satisfies a desire we have). And Pride of Life (the appeal to be greater, even to be like God).
We each fall to one or all three of these temptations.
Everyone is tempted in one of these three ways.
Who are you? You are body, soul and spirit.
Notice God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our Likeness…” The “Us” is God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.
When God made Adam from the dust of the earth, He formed Adam and then breathed the breath of life into him. (Genesis 2:7) There man was, fully formed and in the hands of God but not yet alive until God breathed life into Adam. When God breathed into Adam – God was not only imparting air into Adam’s lungs He breathed the spirit into Adam and mankind “became a living being (soul).”
Your body is the physical part of you that is only the dwelling place for your soul and spirit. Your body will die one day but your soul and spirit will live eternally. Your body enables you to relate to the world.
Your soul connects your body and spirit. Your soul is the part that makes you who you are. Your soul is the center of your thinking, feelings, emotions, intellect and your will. Your soul reveals your personality.
Your spirit is the part of you that relates to God.
Your spirit can only be filled with God. People seek satisfaction in everything and anything. We try to fill our God given spirit with everything but what it was created for – a relationship with God. When a person dies, the soul and spirit together go immediately to either heaven or hell. Hell was not originally intended for mankind it was for the serpent, the devil the enemy of your soul. It was he, who chose to rebel against God in heaven and took one-third of the angels with him. After God created mankind the devil deceived mankind, tricked us into trying to fill our soul and spirit with things that draw us away from God. By our refusal to have a relationship with Christ, we sentence ourselves to hell. God has made a way of escaping hell but if we don’t take advantage of this escape God provides, what option do we have except our own self-deception?
What you do with Jesus will decide where your soul and spirit spend eternity.
The question is asked, “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord…” (Hebrews 2:3) How will we escape judgment? We cannot escape judgment. Ask Jesus to forgive you for your sin and wrong-doing and He will forgive you, it’s a promise He made! (1 John 1:9) Your identity was stolen long ago but the good news is that cost for the recovery, restoration and redemption of your identity has already been paid for by Jesus, God’s Only Son.
Who Are You? You are Body, Soul and Spirit, formed, forged, and fashioned in the image of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
