Mountain Home outshoots West Memphis

By Billy Woods

WM School District Just three days after they put forth an electric performance in a double-overtime loss at North Little Rock, the West Memphis Lady Devils experienced a letdown effect in losing to Mountain Home 51-46 last Friday night at Lehr Arena. After lighting up the scoreboard for 80 points in 38 minutes at North Little Rock, the Lady Devils (145 overall, 4-2 in the 7A/6AEast Conference) suffered through a .378 shooting percentage from the floor (14 of 37 attempts) and they had trouble defending the perimeter as Mountain Home (13-7, 4-2) hit 6 of 12 from three-point range.

'We didn't play the way we thought we would on defense tonight,' West Memphis head coach Shelia Burns explained. 'When you give up that many threes playing manto- man something's wrong.'

The West Memphis girls led for most of the first half until the Lady Bombers' Hannah Pfeifer hit a shot at the buzzer to give her team a 24-22 lead at halftime.

'We talked about that shot at halftime,' Burns said. 'We felt that could be something that could swing the momentum and we didn't want to let it, but that shot ended up being big for (Mountain Home).'

West Memphis led only once the rest of the game.

'This was one of those games that was frustrating to watch,' Burns added. 'I think we took (Mountain Home) for granted. We'd played with such heart at North Little Rock and I think we eased our foot off the pedal.'

West Memphis limited Mountain Home to zero field goals in the final 6:17 of the contest, but Mountain Home drained 10 out of 12 shots from the free-throw line to secure the lead.

Lady Devil senior guard Sable Greer, who exploded for a career-high 31 points, including 13 of 15 shooting from the free-throw line at North Little Rock, continued her solid run of play with 18 points and 13 of 15 shooting from the foul line. But Greer was the only double-figure scorer for the home squad. Six-foot-four senior LaShala Saine, who recorded a double-double at North Little Rock, was held by the smaller Lady Bombers to only seven points. Niyah Townsend added six and Nikki Higgs notched five.

The Lady Bombers got 17 points from Micah Hudson, who hit a game-high four three-pointers, while Pfeifer pumped in 13 and Cassie Martin hit for 11.

The Lady Devils, who are 1-1 in 7A-East play, host Little Rock Central on Tuesday night.
