Some want to expand it for recreational use while others wish it would go back to being 100% illegal, but whichever end of the issue you fall on, there’s no denying that the medical marijuana industry is booming in the State of Arkansas — to the tune of more than a quarter of a billion dollars last year alone.

In fact, medical pot prescription card holders in Arkansas spent $24 million in December alone on medical marijuana purchases, bringing the total for the year to $251.9 million. Sales for the same time frame last year were $257.4 million. Sales for 2022 totaled $283 million, the largest amount since the industry launched.

With some end-of-the-month sales remaining to be tallied, patients have purchased 68,877 pounds in 2024 at the state’s 37 dispensaries. Although the overall spend is down year to year, there is a significant increase in pounds purchased, an indication of lower prices.

“The two state taxes on medical marijuana have generated $28.5 million in 2024, with the overall amount since the industry launched now approaching $150 million,” Scott Hardin, spokesperson for the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration, said. “The number of medical marijuana patient cards continues to increase.

We began the year with 97,374 cards and Department of Health now reports 109,095 active cards.”

The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Commission will meet Jan. 9 to review these figures and set an agenda for 2025.

With three dispenseries in West Memphis, Crittenden County received a share of the sales boon, with more than 375 pounds of medical marijuana sold last month:
