Game-tying three-point shot rims out in tough loss to Red Raiders

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas women’s basketball’s fourth quarter comeback against Texas Tech (10-2) wasn’t enough as the Hogs fell, 7572, inside Bud Walton Arena on Sunday.

The Razorbacks (6-6) had a chance to tie the game with six seconds left but Kiki Smith’s three rimmed out as time expired.

The Red Raiders started the game cold, shooting 1 for their first 11 from the field, and ended the game cold with no field goals in the last 4:06 of the fourth quarter. The Hogs took advantage of both droughts, opening the game with an 11-1 run and closing the game with a 11-5 advantage in the final four minutes. Tech got up by as much as 10 points Freshman guard Phoenix Stotijn made her much awaited debut after she checked in at the 5:43 mark in the first quarter. The Dutch native settled in in the second half and shot 3-6 from three and converted her lone free throw attempt. Stotijn finished with 12 points and played just over 20 minutes.

Senior guard Izzy Higginbottom led all scorers with 26 points and went 7-8 from the free throw line. The Batesville, Ark. native currently leads the SEC and ranks fourth in the NCAA in scoring (23.8).

Vera Ojenuwa recorded her second straight double-double (12 pts, 11 rebs) and her fourth of the season. Eight of her 12 boards were on the offensive end.

Arkansas led for 9:22 and finished 17-22 at the charity stripe.

Up Next

Arkansas will leave for Cherokee, N.C. on Monday to prepare for the Cherokee Invitational later in the week. The Hogs will open the tournament on Wednesday night against Liberty (6-3).
