At the most recent city council meeting, Mayor Marco McClendon highlighted the progress and enforcement plans for his “Operation Pull Back & Take Pride” initiative, aimed at keeping West Memphis clean, safe, and visually appealing. The mayor emphasized the collaboration with the West Memphis Police Department to ensure compliance and community involvement in the effort.
The initiative focuses on reducing the environmental and safety risks associated with improperly stored trash collection carts. Mayor McClendon noted that carts left at the curb not only create an eyesore but can contribute to pollution, increase the risk of theft, and become hazards when blown into streets during strong winds.
As a part of this initiative, residents are reminded of Ordinance 2555, Section 2.2.1, which outlines proper trash cart storage. Key provisions include: Trash carts must be removed from the curb by 6:00 a.m. the day after scheduled pickup. Non-compliance may result in fines up to $100.
Support for Residents in Need Recognizing that some residents may face challenges in adhering to these guidelines, the city offers a hardship exemption service. Residents with disabilities or physical limitations can apply for assistance to have their carts managed by the city. Eligibility requires documentation of a disability and the issuance of a special service tag.
Residents with questions or those seeking assistance are encouraged to contact: Code Enforcement Department: 870-732-7520 or 870-732-7671 Public Works Division (for hardship exemptions): 870-732-7671 Mayor McClendon concluded his remarks by urging all residents to take pride in their community and to play their part in keeping West Memphis clean and beautiful.
