The Bikes for Tykes Christmas giveaway, led by Marion Street Superintendent Gordon Floyd and Marion Water Department Manager Jerry Kelly, is gearing up for another year of spreading holiday cheer to children and families across Crittenden County. For over a decade, Floyd and Kelly, both veterans, have dedicated themselves to this initiative, inspired by the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program.
“Last year, we gave away 134 bikes to kids. With the money left over, we also purchased blankets for nursing homes and even dolls,” said Kelly, reflecting on the program’s success. “We bought every bicycle Walmart had!”
Since its inception ten years ago, Bikes for Tykes has distributed over 1,400 bikes. “The first year, we gave away 65 bikes, but now we average about 150 every year,” Kelly noted. “We want to grow and keep growing. It’s just wonderful, and it recharges my batteries for at least half a year.”
Community Support and Fundraising
The initiative thrives on donations from individuals and local businesses. This year, the 10th Annual Pancakes with Santa, hosted by the Christian Motorcycle Association, will be a major fundraising event.
