A week after the incident there are still very few details being releiased as West Memphis Police continue their investigation into a shooting that took place outside of Southland Casino H otel on the morning of Friday, Nov. 8. The incident, which occurred in the parking lot adjacent to the casino on Ingram Boulevard, did not take place inside the casino. One person was reportedly shot and killed in the violent incident but the victim’s name has not been released to the public.
Information provided by the casino's director of communications revealed that the shooting unfolded in the casino’s parking lot but did not speculate on a motive.
'The safety and security of our guests and team members is our top priority,' Glen White said in a statement The casino has confirmed the existence of a comprehensive security program which includes a weapons detection system at every entrance. This system is designed to prevent weapons from entering the building.
“We want to share that our team and guests are safe following the recent, very isolated incident early Friday morning at our casino,” said White.. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected.”
There is no evidence that the shooter had a firearm inside the casino at any time.
“We’re proud that our safety protocols – including advanced weapons detection systems, extensive surveillance and thorough guest identification measures – ensured that no weapons entered our premises,” said White.
“These systems also played a critical role in assisting law enforcement with the necessary information for a swift and thorough investigation.”
Security contacted law enforcement immediately after the incident occurred, according to White. “Our security team immediately contacted West Memphis police after the isolated incident early this morning in the parking lot outside the casino,' he said.
Surveillance video and other relevant information have been turned over to assist in the ongoing investigation.
