Second ASP saturation results in car chases, arrests

More than three dozen arrested in 11-hour operation

Law enforcement agencies in Crittenden County came together last week Saturday for another “saturation” operation targeting criminals and criminal activity in the area. Arkansas State Police, along with agents from the 2nd District Drug Task Force out of Jonesboro, the West Memphis Police Department, and the Marion Police Department, worked together to crack down on illegal activities.

One of the most dangerous moments during the operation came when Arkansas State Trooper Shane Caviness found himself in a highspeed chase on Broadway that ultimately led to the arrest of two suspects in West Memphis. The pursuit began when Trooper Caviness spotted a West Memphis Police vehicle conducting a traf_c stop. The driver, Madison Smith, attempted to ee, prompting Trooper Caviness to chase after them.

The chase reached dangerous speeds in a residential neighborhood before before Caviness was able to stop the suspect vehicle using a Tactical Vehicle Intervention maneuver. Passenger Jerry Cody was ejected from the vehicle during the maneuver and attempted to ee on foot dropping drugs and a stolen _rearm in the process. Cody was apprehended by West Memphis Police of_cers and found in possession of another stolen _rearm, more marijuana, and over two grand in cash believed to be linked to drug proceeds.

In total, the operation resulted in 637 of_cer/violator contacts, 37 arrests, six felony warrants served, 13 DWI citations, and 26 speeding citations issued. Additionally, law enforcement agencies seized seven _rearms, illegal narcotics, marijuana, and methamphetamine.

Captain Philip Hydron, ASP Troop D Commander, praised the collaborative effort of the law enforcement agencies involved, stating, “This is another great example of the relationship the Arkansas State Police has with our law enforcement partners and the commitment each of us shares in protecting the citizens of the State of Arkansas.”

One suspect, Jerry Cody, literally hit the ground running dropping guns, drugs and cash along the way.
