Animal Shelter receives award for rescue

Director Kerry Facello and her crew recognized by Sheriff’s Office for efforts

The Crittenden County Sheriff’s Department recently honored Kerry Facello and her team at the West Memphis Animal Shelter for their heroic efforts in rescuing 72 dogs and one cat from a home in Hughes. Deputies discovered the animals, along with three children, living in deplorable conditions on Earl Beck Road.

The adults, identified as Martin Huerta-Miller, Victoria Martinez, and W.L. Crump, are now facing serious charges of endangering the welfare of minors and animal cruelty. The house was found in a state of disarray, with trash, spider webs, and feces covering the floors.

The West Memphis Animal Shelter, in what was dubbed Operation Bridge Over Muddy Waters, stepped in to assist the sheriff’s department in rescuing the animals and ensuring they received the care they desperately needed. The shelter’s quick action and dedication to saving these animals was greatly appreciated by law enforcement.

In addition to the Appreciation Award, the Crittenden County Quorum Court authorized a check to reimburse the West Memphis Animal Shelter for expenses incurred during the rescue and care of the animals.

Facello and her team at the Animal Shelter were awarded for their efforts in one of the biggest rescue operations in Crittenden County history.
