14 inches, which is average for this lake, although some nice ones were mixed in (se photo). Crappie were up shallow and outnumbered bass by roughly 3 to 1. A good-sized flathead was also sampled up shallow near chunk rock.

Lake Overcup is near Morrilton on Highway 9.

There are two bait shops with lake access on the lake, too, if you need fishing supplies. Note: If you fish Lake Frierson State Park’s lake, you should note that the lake access at the state park will be closed this week for parking lot repaving and access area improvements.

Lake Frierson is in northeast Arkansas. There is other access, though. A primitive access can be found on the Lake Frierson Wildlife Management Area, located on the west side of the lake, on Greene County Road 330, about 1 mile west of State Highway 141 ans State Highway 168.

Kids get thrills from state’s waters

Several of the photos we received in the past week or so from our contributors and others focused on youths enjoying the treasures of our state’s waters, and really, we thought any of them were worthy of the highlighted top spot in the Weekly Fishing Report. So, here we present what it’s all about, getting kids out and enjoying the joys of fishing. One month of school is left and then there will be Free Fishing Weekend and kids’ fishing derbies at the AGFC’s hatcheries and so much more. In fact, there is already an array of fishing derbies planned around the state for May; make sure to check our calendar of events on the agfc.com website to see what’s coming up so you can plan ahead. The aforementioned Free Fishing Weekend will be June 9-11, by the way.

As for our photogenic fivesome (and a guide) this week, we have:

• (top left) Corbin (no last name provided). a 10-yearold angler from Texas, was fishing with guide Austin Kennedy, one of our regular Fishing Report contributors, when he lassoed this impressive 21-inch rainbow trout out of the Beaver Dam Tailwater in northwest Arkansas. Corbin was fishing with chartreuse Fire Eggs. That’s a memory he’ll never forget.

• (upper right) Aiden James Duncan of Hot Springs, a 7-year-old, caught this largemouth bass on Lake Ouachita on north side of Mountain Harbor Resort last Saturday, using a baitcaster and a smoking purple lizard all by himself, according to dad Brett Duncan. “This boy can fish all day even if the fish aren’t biting, and he has outfished me several times and caught more fish,” Dad says. “He’s got a bright future in fishing. Love to see his picture on the report.” You got it!

• (above) Judson House and Jaxon Smith, both 8 years old, caught a boatload of monster slab crappie on the Saline River in Grant County, and here they are with a few examples.

• (bottom right) Eva Eastwold, all of 7 years old, is shown with guide Michael Osborn, who helped her haul in this gorgeous rainbow trout that she caught using shad below the state park dock on the White River.

Take your young angler on a trip this weekend and send us a photo!
