It was a rough weekend for the local high school sports teams and their fans. When this year’s state basketball tournaments got underway across the Natural State, we (and by “we” I mean Crittenden County) had four teams in the hunt for a state title. Both the Marion boys’ and girls’ teams, the Earle boys and the West Memphis girls were all poised for deep runs. In fact, the Patriots had the number one boys team in the state, having gone undefeated throughout the tough 5A East schedule except for a lone loss on the final day of the regular season after the Pats had locked up the top seed in the tourney. The Blue Devil girls were even more of a threat, having swept their regular season conference schedule. And the Earle Bulldogs seemed to be getting hot at just the right time.

Alas, it was not to be. The Marion boys were ousted in the quarterfinals, while the West Memphis and Marion girls were both one win away from playing each other for the 2023 State Championship. Both lost, as did the Earle boys in the semifinals.

But, alas, you might or might not know, but there’s still some postseason basketball to be played right here in

Crittenden County. You can read all about it in the Sports section, so I won’t spoil it for you here, but both the ASU Mid-South men’s and women’s basketball teams won their respective NJCAA Region 2 Championships and will be playing this weekend for a spot in the National Championship Tournament (basically the junior college version of March Madness) and the games will be here in West Memphis at The Dog House on the Greyhounds’ home court.

Tip off is a 2 p.m. Go and support these great teams!
