The boys’ basketball game was still wrapping up when news of the accident began to make the rounds at the Lamar gym. Most of the Lady Warriors were still in attendance.

“We had a gathering last night after the news had broke back up here at the gym,” Schluterman said.

“They got to sit and be together last night and they’ve pretty much been together all day (Wednesday). It’s affected everyone at the school. It’s been a pretty quiet, somber day around here.”

Lamar was originally scheduled to home its Homecoming festivities on Friday when the girls and boys team hosted Perryville. Both those games plus the junior high games scheduled on Thursday have been postponed to a later date.

A prayer vigil was held on Wednesday at the old Clarksville Cinema Parking lot, where students and community members gathered, lit candles, prayed and mourned together.

A 5K for Barnes is planned for 9 a.m. on Saturday with the money raised intended to help the Barnes family.

There is no entry fee to race, but a post shared by the Clarksville-Johnson County Chamber of commerce said those inclined to do so can give through a GoFundMe page established for the family at //gofund.me/30378b8a.

Trumann woman dies in pedestrian accident

TRUMANN — A 43-yearold Trumann woman died Tuesday when she attempted to cross Interstate 555 in Poinsett County and was struck by a vehicle, according to an Arkansas State Police accident report.

Martha Jean Burgess died at about 7:18 p.m. when she was struck by a 2016 Chrysler traveling east on I-555.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured, according to the report
