Arkansas off to 1-4 start in Southeasters Conference play

While it might not be quite time to push the panic button in Fayetteville, the slow start to the Hogs’ SEC schedule is some cause for concern. The Razorback men’s basketball team in now 1-4 in SEC play following a pair of losses last week.

Alabama Pulls Away Late To Defeat #15 Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas was down two, 65-63, after a Jalen Graham basket with 4:54 left before #4 Alabama went on a 13-0 run to hand the #15/16 Razorbacks an 84-69 loss Wednesday night at Bud Walton Arena.

Arkansas, playing its thirdstraight ranked opponent for the first time since 2003-04, falls to 12-4 overall and 1-3 in the SEC.

Alabama is 14-2 and 4-0 in the league.

The game was a tale of two halves. The game was tied at 36 at halftime and both teams struggled to shoot the ball. However, in the second half, Alabama drained 7-of-10 from 3point range and was 14-of-17 at the free throw line.

On the other end, Arkansas was 2-of-7 from deep and 4-of-5 at the line.

Leading the charge for the Crimson Tide in the second half was Brandon Miller, the SEC’s leading scorer.

After being held without a point nor a field goal in the first half, the freshman scored 14 second-half points, making 6-of-7 at the line and sinking two 3pointers during the 13-0 run.

Davonte Davis recorded his second career double-double with 16 points and tying his career high with 10 rebounds. He also played 38:29 and did not commit a turnover with three assists and two steals. Jalen Graham also scored 16 points (8-of-10 FG), tying his season high, while Ricky Council IV had 15 points and Makhi Mitchell had 10.

Vanderbilt Run Too Much For Razorbacks

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt used a 20-3 run midway through the second half, including a 12-0 spurt, to take a 97-84 victory from #15/16 Arkansas Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium.

Vanderbilt led by as many as 14 (73-59) with 7:43 left. The Razorback worked their deficit to seven (7871) after an old-fashion 3point play from Joseph Pinion. Then, with 2:20 left, Pinion drained a 3pointer from the left corner to get the Hogs to within six (83-77). However, Vanderbilt was able to answer each time down the stretch to hold on for the win.

The Commodores shot 69.2% from the field to score 63 points in the second half. Five Commodores scored in double figures including 22 points from Tyrin Lawrence.

Arkansas was led by Ricky Council IV with 24 points and Anthony Black finished with 18 points.

Davonte Davis finished with 17 points and Makhi Mitchell had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Playing Catch-Up

With the slow start to the conference portion of the 2022-23 schedule, the Razorbacks will find it tough to make up ground in the tough SEC, where Alabama is currently 5-0 and atop the standings.

Arkansas stays on the road to play at Missouri on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Game time is set for 8 pm and it will be televised on SEC Network.
