It’s that time of year again as people begin to prepare for fall weather and cover up those barbecue grills, but not so for the city of West Memphis which has two public cooking events coming up. The first, set for Saturday, Oct. 1, in conjunction with the Steak Cookers Association, is the 11th Annual Mid- South Great Steak Cook Off. Entrance fees are $150 and contestants will be provided with two inch and a quarter prime cut steaks to show off their skills in hopes of taking home the first place trophy.

The second event, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Eugene Woods Civic center and sponsored by the city of West Memphis is the inaugural Rhythm and Ribs competition with $5,000 in cash and prizes to be awarded with $1,500 going to the winning team. Entrance fee is $50 and contestants will receive three racks of ribs, two of which must be turned in to judges who, using a scoring system one to _ve, will be judging based on presentation, taste, tenderness, moistness and smoky avor. Anyone interested is encouraged to form their teams and sign up as soon as possible as the event will be limited to only 50 teams.

In the words of West Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Jim Jackson, “It should be a fun time for all involved and county residents will _nally have the chance to put their money where their mouth is and decide once and for all who really makes the best barbecue in Crittenden County.”

Rumors even persist of several team rivalries already forming including among those in the _re and police departments.

The event, which will feature live music and food trucks, kicks off at noon on Saturday, Oct. 29. The competition is open to Crittenden County residents only (at least one member of each team must live in Crittenden County). Lawn chairs are welcome, coolers are not.
