The City of West Memphis’s Community Outreach Program hosted a major citywide event on Saturday, Aug. 6, ahead of the start of a new school year.

“Today was a huge success on Broadway,” said community outreach coordinator Tawana Bailey. “Thank you to each vendor who showed up today. I’m scared to name you all, because I don’t want to omit anyone!”

It was more than hist an opportunity to get kids in a back-to-school frame of mine. The event featured school supply and backpack giveaways as well as health screenings, vaccinations, a meet-and-greet with student resource officers and more. Local community groups were on hand to be a part of the gathering.

“We would especially like to thank Crittenden EMS, Mu Sigma Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho and Tiffany’s Auto Sales for the Backpacks,” said Bailey. “Thank you to Clark’s Towing, East Arkansas Board of Realtors, Good Neighbor- Love Center and Crowley’s Ridge for the School supplies! To our event coordinators, Kendra Phillips, Treshauna Lark, Emily Scarbrough and Kennidi Ridgell, I appreciate you!! Job well done!”

The 2022-23 school year starts Monday, Aug. 22 for students in the West Memphis School District.

It was all hands on deck as more than a dozen local civic groups and nonprofits came together to put on a back-to-school event for the students in the West Memphis community.
