West Memphis seeing more compliance, revenues from enforcement

West Memphis Code Enforcement Officer George Phillips received accolades during the June Public Works Commission meeting. Phillips' primary role under the public works banner has been to enforce garbage, trash and tire codes for the sanitation department, but Phillips received praise from his boss for helping another department get caught up.

City Engineer Amanda Hicks applauded Phillips' work getting the city clerk caught up. Privilege license payments due in January from businesses operating in the city were running behind.

'I would like to thank our code enforcement officer George Phillips. He has brought in a total of $7,759 as of June 3rd,' said Hicks. ' We were actually delinquent on privilege licenses $11,028. So, he collected most of that.'

Phillip's is a licensed law enforcement officer who, prior to coming home to Weest Memphis, had served most recently in Forrest City. Citizens can join in giving him a pat on the back as he works office hours on the streets in West Memphis or as he moonlights doing security at the Big Star on East Broadway.
