ASU Mid-South Women’s Basketball ready for reset in 2020 By the Times Sports Staff sports@theeveningtimes. com It was a rough week last week for the Lady Greyhounds in The Dog House, with the team dropping each of its last three games of the 2019 portion of the schedule at home.

On Monday, visiting Jackson State entered The Dog House on fire and then kept ASU Mid-South at bay as the Lady Greyhounds fell 79-67.

The Lady Greenjays erupted for 28 first-quarter points including five three-pointers while the Lady Greyhounds struggled to score just 11 points in the period.

The hole proved to be a bit too big to dig out of as Jackson State led 41-30 at the half, then kept ASU Mid-South at arm’s length as the Lady Greyhounds couldn’t get closer than 7 the rest of the way.

Jackson State had the rebounding edge, 4240, but the Lady Greyhounds held the visitors to 40.8% shooting while converting at 44.1%.

However, 22 turnovers proved costly as the Lady Greenjays coughed up just 11.

Alindavia Lockett led ASU Mid-South with 20 points and 9 rebounds while Cierra Penn finished with 11 points and 6 boards. Adrianne Chambers and Jaquita Caldwell both chipped in 8 points.

Northeast Mississippi broke open the game in the third quarter and coasted to a 62-40 win over the Lady Greyhounds Thursday at The Dog House.

Then, on Thursday, poor shooting late doomed ASU Mid-South. Down by just a 25-21 margin at the half, the Lady Greyhounds managed only 19 second-half points while the visiting Lady Tigers erupted for 37 thanks to 35 ASU Mid-South turnovers.

The Lady Greyhounds actually won the battle of the boards, 43-42, althought Northeast capitalized on 21 offensive rebounds. ASU Mid-South also held the visitors to 30.0% shooting while converting 37.2% from the field.

Chambers led the Lady Greyhounds with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Aaliyah Lee finished with 8 points and 5 caroms. Caldwell pulled down 8 rebounds and Lockett dished out a team-high 5 assists.

And in the 2019 finale, the Lady Greyhounds battled to the end but fell short in a 72-62 loss to Mississippi Delta Community College Saturday afternoon at The Dog House.

Trailing 33-26 at the half, the Lady Greyhounds battled throughout the second half in a game not determined until the last few minutes thanks to Lockett scoring 9 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter.

But Mississippi Delta shot a blistering 53.8% from the field and an incredible 7-of-9 from the three-point line to keep ASU Mid-South at bay.

Once again, turnovers and missed free throws haunted the Lady Greyhounds as they turned it over 32 times and went just 14-of-28 from the line despite battling even on the boards, 37-37. The Lady Greyhounds shot 51.1% from the field and 33.3% from the arc, but gave up 18 offensive rebounds while collecting only 8 offensive rebounds themselves.

Chambers and Lockett pulled down 7 and 5 rebounds, collectively, and both dished out 5 assists each, while Lee scored 13 points to go with 5 rebounds. Tyler Hitchcock and Ashley Pegue scored 8 points each.

The Lady Greyhounds (4-8) are now off for the holiday break and return to action Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, on the road at Southwest Tennessee Community College, who they beat 70-68 in overtime back on Nov. 9 in the Lady Greyhound Classic. They play 8 of 9 games on the road in January with the lone home game being Saturday, Jan. 18, against Region 2 foe Southern Arkansas University Tech.
