ASU Mid-South women’s basketball on the rebound after lost season

asumidsouthsports.com Basketball practice for the 2019-20 season began Oct.

1, and the Lady Greyhounds have reason to be excited as ten student-athletes will take the court to compete for the program’s third region championship.

Head Coach Mercedes Corona begins her second season at ASU Mid-South and is optimistic about the team she has assembled.

Freshman Kaylan Larry leads the way after earning All-State honors at Little Rock Parkview and will be counted on for her scoring from the point guard position. Cierra Penn adds length and agressiveness at the wing and should add defensive energy.

The third and fourth guards look to be filled by Tyler Hitchcock and Alindavia Lockett. Hitchcock redshirted last season at Cisco College (TX) and will bring experience and a shooting touch from the arc. Lockett, a freshman from Blytheville, could serve as the Lady Greyhounds lockdown defender and is a dangerous slasher who does the dirty work.

In the middle will be 6’1” Aaliyah Lee, a freshman from Munford, Tennessee, who is a true post player that adds a physical defensive presence and can score with her back to the basket. At a long 5’8”, Springdale High’s Ashley Pegue gives the team length and energy and is a solid three-point shooter. Jaquita Caldwell is an aggressive defender who can get to the paint, and Adrianne Chambers could be the biggest sleeper on the team with a dangerous pull-up jumper and a knack to attack, both with the ball and on the boards.

Jerrisha Rice adds energy and a shooting touch and will look to return to the court in December after a preseason foot injury has her currently on the sidelines. Returner Tatyana Burks brings a year’s worth of experience after playing for the Lady Greyhounds last season.

The season opens on the road as the Lady Greyhounds travel to Jackson State Community College in Jackson, Tennessee, November 1, and they play their first home game at The Dog House Monday, November 4, against Copiah-Lincoln Community College (MS). Other highlights include the Lady Greyhound Classic November 8-9, eight more home games before Christmas, and then home-andhome games in January and February against five Region 2 opponents. The Region 2 Tournament will take place March 1 & 3 at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.
