League forming now for popular cookout game

ralphhardin@gmail.com You might know it as bean-bag toss, dummy boards, doghouse, sacks, beans, beanbag, bag-o or some other silly name, but around these parts, it’s known as cornhole.

If you’ve been to a backyard barbecue a tailgate party or a family reunion, you’ve no doubt seen it.

Cornhole is a recreational game (some might even call it a sport) in which players (individual oneon- one, or teams, usually of two) take turns throwing bags of plastic resin (or bean bags) at a raised platform (the board) with a hole in the far end. A bag in the hole scores 3 points, while one on the board scores 1 point. Play continues until a team or player reaches or exceeds the score of 21 by means of cancellation scoring (there are many variations, of course, but this is the standard). Sort of like horseshoes, if you’re more familiar with that particular pastime.

Well, if you’ve got the touch, you need to get in on Cornhole at the Cross, a cornhole league being organized by Justin Craven. Sign-ups are underway now, with league play beginning Tuesday, Aug.

20. Games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Sept. 26, with a league-ending postseason playoff to determine a champion.

Child care will be provided, as well as a snack bar.

Play will be a two-on-two team format. Entry fee for the league is $30 a team ($15 per player if you want to enter as a single and be paired up with another single). There will be cash prizes for the top teams.

The league will play at Cross Community Church, 5422 Hwy. 77, in Marion (just past Sunset, in the warehouse to the left).

Sign-ups are going on now,” said Craven. “It’s indoors, so we won’t have to worry about the weather. It’s six weeks of play, two nights a week — roughly three games per night. It’s $30 per team, $5 for a fillin player.”

Craven offered a few more particulars for the league.

“It’s ages 14-and-up.

Bring your own bags, but we will have some available. Games are to 21 — no bust, no skunk. To sign up, just let me or David Copeland know and pay by week one. If you’ve got softball or something, let us know and we’ll work around your schedule if we can.”

You can find Craven and Copeland on Facebook, or call or text Justin at (901) 371-1388 to sign up or for more information.
