West Memphis to offer 4-6 grade volleyball

School district partnering with Boys & Girls Club to expand program

ralphhardin@gmail.com The popularity of volleyball in the local scene continues to rise, and the West Memphis School District is gearing up to improve early access to the sport for young athletes In a new program being launched this summer in a partnership with the Crittenden County Boys & Girls Club, West Memphis schools are going to offer girls volleyball through the school.

Female athletes going into the fourth, fifth and sixth grades this fall can sign up for the program. Players of all skill levels are invited to play and can sign up at their school from Monday, Aug. 13 through Friday, Aug. 23. It is an affordable option for young girls looking to get into the sport.

The cost is only $25.

The Boys & Girls Club will continue to offer fall volleyball for players and members who do not attend West Memphis schools.

“If you do not attend West Memphis schools, don’t worry,” said club director Darin McCollum. “We will still offer you an opportunity to play. Andy 7-to-13 year-old can still register at the Boys & Girls Club.”

The out-of-district registration cost is $50. Registration is already underway for fall volleyball at the club. Sign-ups are being held now through Friday, Aug. 23.

West Memphis junior high and high school volleyball teams began full practices last week. Lady Blue Devils Coach Erica Lear is in her second year leading the program as she looks to build on the team’s performance last season.
