Students set to perform at the Schoettle Center tonight

DeltaARTS Program Director Crittenden Youth Theatre, a program of DeltaARTS, is proud to present the Repertory Troupe production of A Thousand Cranes. Ten local students, grades 8-12 have been hard at work since March to prepare for this captivating performance made possible by presenting sponsors, Pi Chi Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Repertory Troupe cast members gain valuable skills of presentation and collaboration, as well as practical theatre experience from professional actress and director, Patricia Carreras. Throughout rehearsals actors must memorize their lines and learn blocking with help from Stage Manager, Donia Wade.

A Thousand Cranes presents the true and poignant story of Sadako Saski, who was 2 years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on the small city of Hiroshima, where she lived.

Sadako, now 12 years old, is an excellent athlete who races daily with her friend Kenji to prepare for an important competition.

However, one day while running, Sadako gets dizzy and falls. She is hospitalized, and it is discovered that she has “radiation sickness,” or leukemia-an effect of the bombing that happened 10 years before, during which her grandmother was killed.

The public performance will be Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m. ($10 adults/ $5 children 12 and under) at the Glenn P. Schoettle Arts Education Center, 301 South Rhodes Street.
