A state trooper charged with assault in the third degree entered a plea of not guilty by his lawyer and was given a court date of March 3. The man and his attorney were told by Judge Fred Thorne, “I will have to find a judge to handle this case. I must recuse myself.”
A man in the courtroom was charged with failure to yield and pled no contest.
“Did you go to the eye doctor?”
“Yes.”
“Has the insurance company handled this?” “No, not yet.”
“But you did have insurance?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll dismiss these charges but any time you drive, you must have your glasses on.” “I will.”
A woman in jail was charged with theft and possession. She pled no contest to both charges.
“I didn’t have any alcohol on me.”
“How old are you?”
“20.”
“If you have alcohol on your breath and are under the age of 21, it is the same as having alcohol on you. Where do you live?”
“Nowhere.”
“Who was with you when you were arrested?”
“No one.” “Is there anyone here in the courtroom for you?”
“No.”
“Where are you from?”
“Ft. Smith.”
“How long have you been here?”
“About a year.”
“Where had you been living here?” “On Ross Street.”
“How long has it been since you lived there?”
“Since September. My mom lives here.”
“30 days jail on the theft. I’ll dismiss the possession charge. Call you mother and tell her I want to have a talk with her. Tell her to come to court on Monday.”
A man in jail charged with theft pled guilty.
“You took an iPhone case. Why?”
“It was not intentional, it just happened.”
“It didn’t just happen. It was in your pocket.”
“Where do you live?”
“Clarksville, Tennessee.”
“You came all the way here to steal from our Walmart?” “ I was in Louisiana and came back through here to see my daughter.”
“$350 plus court costs and 10 days jail.”
Another man in jail was charged with driving on suspended and no insurance. He pled guilty to both charges.
“What I hate about this is that you have a wreck and have no insurance and the other person has to use their insurance.”
“I don’t even know.”
“No, you know. $750 plus court costs and three days on the driving on suspended and $400 plus court costs on the no insurance.”
A man in jail was asked, “Do you understand English?”
“Yes.”
“Great, most of the time I ask them that question and they say no and I say, how did you understand the question.”
“How do you plead to no tags?”
“I’m guilty sir.”
“No driver’s license?”
“I’m guilty sir..”
“And no insurance?”
“I’m guilty sir. I was staying at Days Inn and I was working at Margaritas.”
“Can’t you walk to Margaritas from Days Inn?”
“Yes but they had fired me that day.”
“$65 plus court costs on the tags. $65 plus court costs on the no driver’s license and $350 plus court costs on the insurance.”
Another man in the courtroom was charged with careless driving, driving on suspended and no insurance. He pled not guilty to all charges.
“Weren’t you just in my court for driving on suspended?” asked Judge Thorne.
“Yes I was.”
“Set his trial date as soon as possible. You just said to hell with Judge Thorne and these charges so I want to see you back here for trial as soon as possible.”
Ayoung man came forward when his name was called. He was charged with violation of restricted license and pled no contest.
“How old are you?”
“17.”
“What grade are you in?”
“11th at West Memphis Senior High.”
“What kind of grades does he make, mom?”
“Above average. He also takes college courses and he has a 4.0 in his diesel mechanic class.”
Okay mother this is up to you. Don’t even look at him. He can pay $45 plus court costs and go to driver’s school or he can do 8 hours community service and go to driver’s school.”
“Community service and driver’s school,” said his mother.
“Complete your sentence and I’ll take it off your record. Do you have your own car?”
“Yes, sir.”
“You are very lucky that your parents can afford to get you a car. When you are behind the wheel you are responsible. Your mother would have been out about $195. Who pays your insurance?”
“She does.”
“Think about this fine and go take care of it. Be back here for a review on Feb. 29th.”

“The police were right behind me.”
“You should be charged an extra $50 for stupidity. $35 plus court costs and go to driver’s school.”
“If that is my only option,” said the woman.
