Marion Police Chief alerts residents about latest phone scam
Kelley takes to social media to spread awareness
ralphhardin@gmail.com Marion Chief of Police Gary Kelley posted to the Marion Police Department’s Facebook page with an important heads up for residents about a calling scam that has been making the rounds.
“I am writing this to each and everyone about a scam that is going around,” wrote Kelley. “Everyone be aware you may receive a call from a number, 1-866978-7923, from a individual stating he is with Entergy and is asking for the amount of your last energy bills … saying you are behind on your bill.”
The scam is just a latest in a long line of fraudulent callers of late, making claims about everything from the IRS, the Sheriff’s Department, fake lottery and sweepstakes prizes and more, each making some sort attempt to swindle unsuspecting individuals of money or personal information.
“[They] say if you do not pay, your power will be shut off in a few minutes,” said Kelley. “Please do not give these individuals any information.”
The chief did have one other piece of advice.
“Tell the individual you are notifying the local police department and hang up.”
