Lady Devils on Class 7A bubble after loss
WM School District CABOT — Turnovers plagued the West Memphis Lady Devils here last Friday night in a 59-38 loss to Cabot.
The Lady Devils (15-8 overall, 5-5 in the 7A/6AEast Conference) had nearly as many turnovers in the first quarter as they did points. They suffered 10 first-quarter miscues and despite that they trailed Cabot only 14-12 at the end of the stanza.
They turned it over eight more times in the second quarter, but this time Cabot (16-10, 6-4) took advantage.
The Lady Panthers scored the first 11 points of the second quarter, seven of them coming from the free-throw line, as the hosts took charge of the game, leading 25-12.
'That's what the conversation centered on at halftime,' West Memphis head coach Shelia Burns said, in reference to the turnovers.
'We had a lot of bad decisions with the ball.'
Cabot led 33-19 at halftime and 44-30 at the end of three quarters before putting the hammer down in the fourth quarter, scoring the first seven points of the stanza to take a 51-30 lead with only 5:44 to play in the game.
'Right now our big girls are struggling and our guards are struggling,' said Burns. 'So, there's gotta be something I can do to help them relax and get them back to their game.'
Cabot relied heavily on some deft free-throw shooting, making 26 out of 32 for an .812 percentage.
Sable Greer, a senior guard, led West Memphis in scoring with 13 points while Niyah Townsend added 8 and Amesha Brown scored 7.
Cabot got a game-high 23 points from Nicole Calhoon, who hit 9 of her 10 free throws. Anna Sullivan scored all 12 of her points in the first half and Leighton Taylor hit for 10 points.
The Lady Devils hope to get back on the winning track Tuesday night at Lehr Arena against Jonesboro.
