New ASU Mid- South program years in the making

ASU Mid-South Chancellor Debra West provided a time line of key events in the development of the FedEx Aviation Technology Center that opened Wednesday afternoon on the north end of the West Memphis Airport.

“Throughout this process funding, planning and construction, public and private entities, groups and individuals, have worked together to make this dream of a world class aviation technology program in Crittenden County, Arkansas, a reality,” said West.

• March 2010, the U.S.

Department of Labor awards MSCC $3.4 million for aviation maintenance technology program, including partners FedEx.

The company noted its maintenance workforce aging and need for more trained workers.

• January 2011, the Federal Aviation Administration formally approved MSCC accreditation as an aviation maintenance technology school.

• June 2011, West Memphis Airport Commissioner Mel Bearden sells an air worthy 1968 twin engine Beechcraft at below market price to provide MSCC student real world training.

• December 2011, land purchased for Aviation Technology Center through generosity of Dr. Scott Ferguson and Dr. Eddie Bryant.

• September 2012, MSCC awarded $1.5 million U.S.

Dept. of Commerce economic development grant to build the new center.

• October 2012, Delta Regional Authority makes $250,000 gift designated for construction.

• State Senator Keith Ingram and Deborah Ferguson steer GIF funds into the construction project.

• May 2013, Assisi Foundation of Memphis grants $650,000 for continued work.

• September 2014, FedEx gives another $250,000 cash and million dollar FedEx 727 for aviation maintenance training.

• FAA final program approval granted to ASU Mid-South and fall classes held in new center.

• October 2016, Crittenden County re-paves Airport Road in front of the new building.
