ralphhardin@gmail.com Out of work? Looking to start a new career?

For 16 area folks, that opportunity presented itself recently at Southland Casino Racing through a free training program.

“Ever wanted to be a dealer but thought the school would be too expensive?” asked a recent release from the casino. “Well, here’s your chance to go to Dealer School for free!”

Yes, in an effort to shore up its numbers for full-capacity gaming and ahead of demand for its now-underconstruction expanded multimillion- dollar facility, Southland is enticing potential dealers with a variety of incentives — oh, and free training.

“Dealing is a profession,” said the release.

“Southland’s dealer school includes Blackjack and Carnival Games. The value of this training is approximately $5,000 and Southland offers it for free this fall with a $2,000 retention bonus for successful students who meet retention bonus criteria. If you have a positive attitude, outgoing friendly personality, good math and verbal skills, a willingness to learn, and the ability to engage with guests and coworkers then this might be the career for you.”

The first of these new Dealer School courses began last Monday and will be four hours a day, four days a week for six weeks.

The casino is offering afternoon and evening classes to allow flexibility for those first 16 applicants who are headed to their new careers in casino gaming.

Southland plans to offer additional courses in the future. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and must be a high school graduate or possess a GED at minimum. Applicants for future courses may fill out the dealer school application online at https://dn.careers/dealers . Applicants can also apply by completing an application in Southland Casino Racing’s Human Resources department between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Although the courses will set participants up for work at any gaming facility, successful completion of Dealer School classes at Southland Casino Racing could lead to a career at Southland! If hired applicants will receive a $500 incentive bonus after 30 days of class completion and hire. Upon successful completion of 180 days of continuous employment, new hired students will receive an additional incentive bonus of $1,500 dollars. The release notes that job offers are not guaranteed.
