A nightmare scenario

Share

By now, you’ve no doubt heard I-40 into and out of Memphis is a “no-go” due to a crack in one of the main beams of the Hernando de Soto Bridge, or as most of us call it, “The New Bridge” — although it was apparently not built quite as well as “The Old Bridge,” which is actually about 30 years older.

There was a two-year period in my life when I had to cross that bridge daily going to and from work, and I hated it. Even though it was only about a 20 minute commute to my office on Union Avenue, I dreaded it each and every time, even more than the 60-minute commute I had going to college or driving from my house out in Lee County to the dog track in West Memphis during the only time in my life I did not live in Crittenden County.

So, I definitely feel for all of you who are now having to get over there and back again with only the one bridge in operation. I have a friend who says he’s going to drive up and go through Caruthersville into Dyersburg to get to Collierville every day rather than deal with that nightmare scenario.

And that’s what this is. It’s like what we were all saying would happen if they went through with that I-55 roundabout that TDOT keeps trying to launch… but somehow worse.

In the coming days, we’ll get a better idea of how long the bridge will be shut down. Let’s hope it’s before winter weather arrives, because if we get any ice or snow and there’s a wreck, it’ll look like the Suez Canal did a few weeks ago when that barge got stuck… but somehow worse.
