Back to normal… sadly

“It’s not all bad.”

That’s what I was saying this tim last year when the coronavirus pandemic was just kicking into high gear. With cancellations and shutdowns everywhere, I was doing my best to find some nuggets of good news here and there.

Remember how happy everyone was when the dolphins have returned to the canals of Venice, Italy? Good times.

Oh, and the skies of L.A. were smog-free for the first time in years.

A little closer to home, if you kept an eye on the weekly police reports we run in the paper, you that there were far fewer of them. In addition to shutting down a lot of other activities, the pandemic seemed to have curtailed crime in the community.

Notice I said “were” far fewer of them. Yes, with the biggest part of COVID-19 behind us, everyone is venturing out again, including criminals. And do you remember those low gas prices we had (back when we couldn’t go anywhere)? Have you seen gas prices lately? Yep, they’re back up, a dollar higher or so from April 2020. I once had a guy explain to me in great detail how low gas prices is actually somehow bad for the economy as a whole, but as someone who loathes overpaying for anything, I’m all for paying less at the pump.

The point here, though, is that there’s some sense of nrmalcy returning, but with it comes a few things that we might’ve hoped would stay gone forever. But still, it does seem to be getting safer.

And… how about those stimulus checks, am I right?
