Patriots baseball, softball roll over tough Hurricane squads

Marion Patriot Athletics JONESBORO — Patriot baseball and softball put themselves in good position for their postseason hopes on Wednesday.

Marion’s teams won three of the four games against the Jonesboro Golden Hurricane and scored plenty of runs in the process.

The Lady Patriots (9-4 overall, 4-0 5A East) outscored the Hurricane, 33-9, in their two games, including a 9-run fourth inning in the first game and an 8-run third inning in the second game. The Lady Pats all had a great day at the plate, but it was junior Emerson Miller who led the offensive charge. Miller was 7-for-7 in the two games with 3 home runs, two doubles, a triple and 8 RBIs.

Sophomore Anna Murphy pitched both of the 15-2 and 18-7 victories for the Lady Pats. Murphy struck out 9 Lady Canes between the two games and gave up 11 hits. She also helped herself at the plate where she was 4-for-7 with a double and 5 RBIs.

The Patriot baseball team (11-3, 3-1) knew this was an important pair of games as far as the end-of-year standings go, and they responded by putting runs on the board early. Marion had a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning of the first game, but had to weather the Hurricane bats late to hold on to an 11-8 victory.

Marion only outhit the Canes, 7-6, in that game, but they were able to capitalize when they did make contact. Senior Daedrick Cail hit three home runs and had 5 RBIs in the first game.

Jonesboro kept building their momentum into game two, but the Patriots did not go away quietly in the 12-6 loss. Marion still outhit the Canes, 11-10, including another 3-hit game for Cail. Junior Gage Watson also had three hits between the two games, including a triple in each contest.
