First northeast  Arkansas medical marijuana dispensary opens in Brookland

BROOKLAND — On Tuesday, NEA Full Spectrum became the first medical marijuana dispensary to open up in northeast Arkansas.

It’s the 12th overall in the state. Customers waited in line Tuesday morning for the grand opening of the closest medical marijuana dispensary to Crittenden County until one of the three approved for operation in West Memphis opens for business.

“I celebrated. I thought, yeah, this is right up my alley. This is for me,” said Penny Elder, who began using medical marijuana a few months ago after she got tired of taking medications prescribed by her doctor.

“I’ve gotten off of two of my other medications, so the medical marijuana is doing me so me good,” she said in

an interview with Memphis’s WMC Action News 5 General manager Lance Huey says they have many levels of security in place and the proper identification is required to go in.

“State ID and their medical marijuana card. You have to have a card to be in this building. Either a worker or a patient,” said Huey.

According to the Arkansas Department of Health website, as of Dec. 6 more than 30,000 medical marijuana ID cards have been approved.

Patients must meet certain qualifications including being 18 or older, being diagnosed with a qualifying medical condition and having an official written certification from a physician.

“We’re just working to make sure we have the products that the customers want and need and that we do it in a safe environment,” said Huey.

NEA Full Spectrum plans to add a delivery service within a 50 mile radius.

Since the first dispensary opened in May 2019, Arkansas’ medical marijuana patients have spent a total of $23.3 million to obtain 3,433 pounds of medical marijuana.

The West Memphis Design & Review Commission recently approved design plans for the first facility to open in the city early next year.

Arkansas native Marybeth Byrd’s run on The Voice ends

ARMORELL — Arkansas native Marybeth Byrd is no longer a contestant on The Voice.

After results were annouced Tuesday night, Byrd did not make the Top 4, which would have allowed her to sing in the Finale of The Voice next week.

Town in ‘unimaginable pain’ after mother, son killed in shooting

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Police continue to investigate after a mother and son were found dead in their home Tuesday.

The pair were found in a home in the Hurstbourne Park neighborhood off Murfreesboro Road, police indicated.

The woman, 43, and her 12-year-old son had both been fatally shot. Another family member discovered their bodies and called 911, according to FPD.

Police have not released their names pending notification of the family.

“This case brings unimaginable pain to the family, and our prayers are with them.

Our detectives are conducting a thorough investigation to determine what exactly happened,” a release from FPD stated.

Officials remained gathered outside a large white house in the 300 block of Mealer Street around 8 p.m.

There was no ongoing danger to the public, FPD indicated, nor an at-large suspect. Police did not confirm any arrests related to the investigation in a short statement Tuesday evening.

FPD spokesperson Lt.

Charles Warner said the slayings were being treated as homicides, the first such crimes reported in Franklin in 2019.

Officers arrived around 5:25 p.m. and determined there was “nothing to be done” for either victim, Warner said. He said whatever happened occurred in rapid succession on Tuesday afternoon.
