WMPD makes a pair of arrests over busy weekend

Domestic disturbance, gunfire put police into action

As West Memphis police officers were dealing with a domestic disturbance involving a second-degree battery on an adult and a four-year-old child Friday night, other officers responded a short time later to another disturbance call where the suspect began shooting at them.

Assistant Police Chief Robert Langston said it all unfolded shortly before 10 p.m. Friday night, when officers were dispatched to a domestic call at 205 Falls St.

The complainant told officers that his mother and a man later identified as Darius Jackson, 28, were involved in a physical altercation and when he went to check on her he made contact with Jackson but was unable to locate his mother.

A family member of the woman told officers Jackson threatened to shoot him while the woman was getting her belongings.

Jackson reportedly threw a radio on the porch, striking his four-year-old daughter.

Langston said Jackson then grabbed the woman and pulled her back into the residence at which time he reportedly struck her.

After repeated unsuccessful attempts to make contact with Jackson who was inside the house members of the police Special Response Team were called to the scene where they made entry and took Jackson into custody without further incident.

Jackson has been charged with battery in the second degree, injuries to persons 12-years-old and younger, terroristic threatening in the first degree and threatening death and serious injury, all felonies. He was released on bond on Tuesday.

Then, at approximately 11:25 p.m. Friday officers were called to investigate a stolen vehicle report at the intersection of South 19th Street and East Polk Avenue.

Langston said as officers went over to the 20th Century Motel, 923 E.

Broadway, to check on a subject that matched the description of a person who reportedly stole a vehicle, there was a disturbance going on at the nearby Bull Market gas station.

As officers made their way over to the gas station they heard gunfire coming from the 100 block of South 20th Street.

Langston said the suspect, later identified as Kelvin Deon Johnson, 40, of 401 N. 11th St., West Memphis, wearing a gray hoodie was actively shooting at other responding officers and was fleeing towards South 21st Street. ARREST

Special Response Team officers arrived on the scene and located Johnson hold up in a vacant house at 321 S. 20th St.

Officers made entry into the house and observed that the attic access was down.

Officers attempted multiple times to call out Johnson with no success. When SRT officers entered the attic they located Johnson hiding in the northeast corner.

Langston said Johnson had to be forcibly removed from the attic due to him not complying to the commands.

Johnson has been charged with criminal attempted capital murder, possession of a firearm, and three counts of terroristic act/ shooting into a vehicle. He remains in custody at the Crittenden County Detention

“The Criminal Investigation Division, Narcotics, Violent Crime Suppression Unit (VCSU), Patrol and Special Response Team members did an outstanding job this weekend dealing with these incidents.

“Our officers faced two high-risk incidents at the same time and every officer involved did an excellent job. Detectives were able to find witnesses that identified the suspect that had shot at our officers and worked quickly to obtain warrants for his arrest.

Narcotics and the VCSU began following leads and conducting surveillance to locate the suspect.

The SRT, with the assistance of our patrol division and the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office, were able to take the suspect into custody before a member of the public or one our officers were hurt by
