Standouts from 2019 season named to All-Conference, All-State teams

By Ralph Hardin

ralphhardin@gmail.com While the Marion Patriots’ 2019 football season may have ended on a sour note with a loss at home to Siloam Springs in the first round of the Class 6A State Playoffs, there was still plenty to look back on and be proud of.

The Patriots started the seasons strong with a big win over Blytheville back on Aug. 30, but then the wheels came off for a while, as Marion dropped four of its next five, including a heartbreaking overtime 41-40 loss to West Memphis in the 2019 Hometown Showdown that seemed, right until the end, to be “this year” to finally get a win over the Blue Devils on the gridiron.

But those four losses would be the only “L’s” the Patriots would take in the regular season. Marion went on a tear after that, and the team rattled off four straight wins, closing out the regular season with a big 34-25 win against the Jonesboro Hurricane on Nov. 7 that not only cost Jonesboro the 6A East conference title, but also clinched a home playoff game for the Patriots.

While that game on Nov.

15 did not go Marion’s way, the Patriots still racked up some impressive stats for the season, including the four-game winning streak, an overall winning record (6-5, 5-2 in 6A East play), and some personal accolades for Patriot standouts.

Those accolades came earlier this week when a dozen Marion football stars were recognized for their on-field achievements by being named to the 6A East All-Conference and All-State teams.

Four Marion players were named to both the All-State and All-Conference squads:

• Daedrick Cail — Quarterback, Junior

• Brandon Calvert — Strong Safety/Cornerback, Senior

• Antonio Grays — Linebacker/ Running Back, Junior

• Slade Webb — Wide Receiver, Senior Eight other Patriots were named to the All-Conference team:

• Clay Aureli — Defensive End/Defensive Tackle, Senior

• Ken Brown — Tackle/ Defensive End, Senior

• Drew Granger — Middle Linebacker/Full Back, Junior

• Brandon Hayes — Running Back, Junior

• Cayden Hunt — Wide Receiver, Strong Safety, Senior

• Dylan Pieri — Kicker, Sophomore

• Anthony Price — Running Back, Outside Linebacker, Senior

• Justin Scott — Noseguard, Defensive Tackle, Junior Congratulations to these players and the rest of the Marion Patriots team and coaching staff on a successful season.
