West Memphis Code enforcement has a new badge on the job. West Memphis resident George Phillips holds a career long resume in law enforcement including 13 years previous work at West Memphis Police.

Phillips also invested his career with the U.S.

Marshals office in Memphis and as a Lieutenant in Cross County. His latest career stop is the code enforcement officer for the sanitation department.

“I’ve lived in West Memphis since 1980 and am glad to be here,” said Phillips.

Phillips reported for the first time during the October meeting of the Public Works Commission. The new position called for exclusive code enforcement duties.

Phillips wrote a pile of warning notices for residential curbside trash violations during September.

“We had 40 write ups and 23 were taken care of,” said Phillips.

Part of the success the first month out rested in Phillips being a longtime city resident.

“Most of the people he has visited have been complying because he knows them,” said Public Works Administrative Assistant Rhonda Standridge.

“I can see you are out there working; I’ve seen some things change already,” said Councilman Charles Wheeless.

Sanitation also reported to commissioners having collected 685 illegal tires dumped across the city during September.
