A 30-year-old West Memphis man is facing felony charges following a three-hour standoff early Monday morning with West Memphis police.

The WMPD responded to a call that a shotgun wielding man was holding two adults and four children hostage inside a South 21st Street apartment, according to Assistant Police Chief Robert Langston.

Police received information about 3 a.m. Monday morning regarding the situation. When uniformed officers arrived and evaluated the situation it was determined that members of the department’s SWAT team were needed to also respond.

Also responding to the scene was the Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office’s Mine Resistant Armored Vehicle.

Sheriff Mike Allen said one of the sheriff’s office SWAT members, Lt. Darrell Prewitt, assisted with situation.

Sheriff Allen said vehicle was used for officer safety.

Langston said SWAT members made several attempts to communication with Jones and when they got no response officers used flash bang grenades to draw the armed man and occupants from the apartment.

Langston identified the man as Jerome Jones of West Memphis. He has been charged with first degree false imprisonment and is scheduled to appear in district court Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.

Jones was immediately taken into custody and later charged in what Langston described as a “domestic situation.” There were no reported injures to the two adults or the children.

During the three hourlong standoff patrol units blocked off portions of East Broadway near the scene for precautionary measures, Langston said.
