‘A Political View’ By Sherry Holliman

The participation of women in national, local and community leadership roles has become an important focus. The number of women in politics has always been relatively small but their power is needed now more than ever. Some may ask why it matters if women become political leaders, elected officials, or activists? Why does the world need more women involved in all aspects of the political processes?

Women political participation offers tangible gains for democracy, including greater responsiveness to citizen needs, increased cooperation across party and ethnic lines, and a more sustainable future.

Women’s participation in politics helps advance gender equality and affects different ranges of policy issues that get considered and the types of solutions that are proposed. Some may share a strong belief that as more women are elected to office, the result in policy making might emphasize the need to improve community quality of life and implement changes that prioritize societal challenges for families, women, and ethnic and racial minorities.

Women’s engagement is crucial no matter whether they are young or older, educated or uneducated, live in rural or urban areas; every woman will share a very different life experiences that will lead to different priorities and needs.

However, not every woman elected to government or another legislative body will place women’s issues or rights at the forefront of her own agenda.

Clearly, women’s representation is not the only factor, but it is a critical factor for the development of inclusive, responsive, and transparent democracies.

So, why women in politics? The positive impact of women in politics is undeniable. History has taught us, there is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.

Women are likely to raise economic productivity, improve nutrition, promote health and increase the chances of educational equal opportunities for everyone. In today’s time there is a dramatic underrepresentation of women in leadership positions, which is the result of the elimination of women’s talents and skills in political field.

There are many barriers that women face in getting nominated for elected offices and conducting campaigns. These obstacles include the election system itself, lack of money, and the weak professional networking system.

Men candidates can rely on their finances to support their own campaigns or develop a strong networking system to conduct a strong campaign. Support should go both ways to allow a balance in the government system. Male and female legislators must work together in order to solve the problems in their communities.

The women elected will only help to develop goals that will build strong sustainable democracies.

Women must be encouraged, empowered and supported in becoming strong political and community leaders. There’s not a one size fits all solution to gender inequality in politics.

But supporting women running for office will help to ensure that women’s voices are heard.
