The six-way race to fill the West Memphis Ward 4 city council position vacated when Marco McClendon was elected mayor ended with no clear winner in the May 14 special election, leaving two men left vying for the seat in a runoff election.

Tuesday’s runoff was contested between educator and former Langston Bag employee David Murray and former Fire Chief and now County Bailiff Arburt Robinson. The two were the top vote earners in the original crowded field of six that included Ida Long, Arlet Brown Jeffries, Eric Parker, and Jennifer McCoy.

In the runoff, it was Murray coming out on top, outpolling Robinson by a final tally of 71 to 63.

“Ward 4 will have its representation and voice,” said West Memphis City Councilman James Pulliaum.

“This will help us fill the gap and solidify the resolve of the city to move forward.”

Pulliaum spent time with contenders after the final returns. He personally thanked each candidate and encouraged them to stay active in city issues.

Murray will serve the remainder of McClendon’s term on the council. If he chooses to seek re-election, that seat will be up for grabs again next November.
