Grae Kessinger following in grandfather’s footsteps
WM School District A familiar name to West Memphians and folks in the Delta was drafted in Tuesday’s second day of the Major League Baseball Draft.
Shortstop Grae Kessinger, the great nephew of West Memphian Shirley Kessinger and the late, great Bill Kessinger, was selected by the Houston Astros in the second round (68th overall pick) of the draft. Kessinger, like his grandfather, the great Donnie Kessinger, is a slick-fielding shortstop for the Ole Miss Rebels.
Kessinger is also the second cousin of West Memphian Mike Kessinger and of Kathy Daniel of Bryant.
Donnie Kessinger was a seven-time MLB all-star with the Chicago Cubs in the 1960s and ‘70s.
Grae’s draft slot is expected to command a signing bonus of $954,000.
