Earle girls dominant in win over Lee

They were a little rusty from not having played in two weeks, but the Earle Lady Bulldogs ran over the Lee Lady Trojans on senior night at home 66-35.

Coach Corey Garrett said he was glad to see the seniors get the win and that the team is playing well heading into tournament play which starts on Monday at 4 p.m. in Marked Tree.

“Not a bad way to end the season,” Garrett said. “Our seniors had a good game.

We got a nice home win.

I’m happy where we are at. I think we are peaking at the right time.”

The win capped an almost perfect conference record.

Earle (17-3, 13-1) only loss in conference came after they were forced to forfeit a game against Marked Tree following a scuffle at home against Cross County.

Earle jumped out to a 27-7 lead at the end of the first period, but despite maintaining a 10 point lead at the half, allowed Lee to match them with 12 points in the second period to take a 29-19 lead at the half.

“We had a sluggish game to start,” Garrett said. “We hadn’t played in over two weeks. So I knew there would be some rough spots. We just needed to pick up the pace.”

Lee did it’s best to slow the game down against the high powered Earle offense, not wanting to give the Lady Bulldogs a chance to hang a 100 point loss on them.

“This is the third time we’ve played them,” Garrett said. “The first time they tried to run on us in their place. So I knew they would play a little slower tonight.”

But Earle poured on the offense in the third, out scoring the Lady Trojans 22-11 to take a 51-30 lead in the third period, then finished with a 25-5 run in the final period to seal the 66-35 win.

Earle held Lee to 36 percent shooting from the floor and out scored them 54 to 18 in the paint.

Roshala Scott led the team with 25 points and five rebounds and was 11 of 14 from the floor and 2 of 3 on three pointers.

Kelsey Moore scored 12 points, Carla Maples pumped in 10 points and had four rebounds, while T’asja Hughley added 8 points for Earle.

“All the girls played a good game,” Garrett said.

“I even moved some ninth graders in there that I wanted to take a look at.”

The Lady Bulldogs will face off against KIPP Delta at 4 on Monday in Marked Tree.

“We’ll go in expecting a tough ballgame,” Garrett said. “But I’m happy where we are at and our goal is to win the state championship.”
