‘ Bat and Cat’ dig the lunch menu at Marion eatery
www.theeveningtimes.com Place: Seafood Shack Address: 308 Bancario Road, Marion Rating: 4 of 5 POWs When it comes to dining out in Marion — or West Memphis for that matter — there aren’t a whole lot of places to choose from. I don’t mean that in a bad way and no offense to the chain restaurants. Honestly, I really could eat at the Shake Shack every day or Popeyes or Colton’s or any of the Mexican restaurants in our area.
But for this outing I thought it would be good to pick a place on “this side” of the river for a review.
“Cat” couldn’t be here so I was joined by “Alfred” for this lunch break. We decided to go to the “Seafood Shack” in Marion in Angelo’s Grove. This is the fourth time I have been to Seafood Shack and my second or third time with “Alfred.” Each time we have gone there the food has always been good.
I ordered the catfish Po Boy ($8.99) with fries and a drink. “Alfred” went with the fried shrimp Po Boy ($8.99) with fries.
“Alfred’s” Po Boy had a generous amount of shrimp. In fact, it was overflowing with shrimp and a few fell out every time you took a bite. The meal also came with a side of slaw.
“Alfred” thought the slaw was a good southern style dry slaw with a hint of vinegar. And as for the shrimp Po Boy, “Alfred” said it was as good a Po Boy as you would find at any similar style restaurant in Memphis.
My catfish Po Boy had two generous sized filets seasoned with the right amount of Cajun flavoring.
It was topped with a sauce but also came with a side of spicy mayonnaise. I also enjoyed the slaw and these may be my favorite fries of all the places to dine out in Marion.
Our server, Kyrsten, greeted us when we came in and was very pleasant and attentive. She refilled my drink and stopped by a couple of times to ask how everything was and whether there was anything else she could get us.
What I like about the Seafood Shack is that it is always clean inside, and it never seems to be too busy, although Kyrsten did tell us that it gets busier later toward the lunch hours. We got there right around 11 a.m. so I wouldn’t expect it to be that terribly busy.
There were a few more diners who came in as we were wrapping up our meal. “Alfred” commented that “Seafood Shack” may be the best kept secret in Marion.
Seafood Shack also is open for dinner. So if you are looking for some more serious seafood offerings like surf and turn with choice of lobster or crab legs, or mixed seafood boil bags with king crab, snow crab, clams, or mussels, those kinds of offerings are also available on the menu.
But for lunch, a Po Boy certainly hits the spot.
I agree with “Alfred” that the portions are generous at Seafood Shack. In fact, it actually might be too much food to finish in one sitting. And I think “Alfred” is also right when he said that the food is as good as you will find across the river in Memphis.
For a seafood restaurant, “Seafood Shack’s” prices are in line with what you would expect to pay for seafood. Our Po Boys with two drinks came to $22.23.
That’s really only $11 apiece and very in line with what you will pay anywhere if you dine our for lunch.
Overall, I would recommend “Seafood Shack” if you are looking for some place to go other than fast food for lunch. We give it a solid FOUR POW’s out of five.
