The Saturday shooting at a West Memphis laundromat/ car wash on the corner of Avalon and Broadway that drew regional news coverage was linked by police to a shooting earlier last week.
West Memphis Police Department Criminal Investigation Division Commander Capt. Joe Baker said the weekend shooting that sent one to the hospital and grazed an innocent bystander was retaliation for a shooting on South Third Street last week.
Courtney Cosby, 22, remains in custody on a $125,000 bond for the Saturday shooting Incident “Suspects were shooting back and forth from cars in the area of the car wash,” said Baker. “Jarvis Cole was struck by one of the bullets, and also an innocent bystander was grazed by a round while washing her car in the stall next to his.”
Detectives had identified more suspects and obtained warrants by Monday morning.
“Detectives are out this morning and it is still very much an active investigation,” said Baker. “We are running down names we have heard were involved.” Police confirmed the shooting at the car wash appeared to be retaliation for the shots fired at a house on South Third last week. A man was shot in the leg. Investigators gathered more than a dozen shell casings at that scene and the front door had seven bullet holes.
“The car wash shooting was probably retaliatory for the shooting on Third Street,” said Baker.
“Numerous shots were fired into a house and one person struck. He has been released from the hospital.” It all started over an earlier incident.
“We think this started with a beef,” said Baker. “Most of the time with these two groups its not about drugs.
It’s that some one is in the wrong spot or on somebody else’s turf, their side
