CAP Cadets take first flight

Civil Air Patrol cadets fly the friendly skies for first orientation flight

From the 99th Composite Squadron Arkansas Wing Civil Air Patrol

West Memphis Cadets Trevor Thomen and Jasmine Prackett from the 99th Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol, recently received their first orientation rides as part of the cadet program.

Cadets in the Civil Air Patrol receive orientation rides to familiarize them with how a plane flies and learn more about aviation.

From the orientation rides, cadets can go further in the program and attend flight encampment to help them start on a career in aviation. There is a shortage of pilots in the military and civilian industry and if any young person, ages 12 and up, is interested in becoming a pilot, Civil Air Patrol can help you. Any young person interested in entering the military can earn advanced rank by completing certain achievements in the cadet program.

If you are interested in becoming part of a fun organization involved in aerospace education, search and rescue and other related activities, contact Lt. Col.

Larry Webster at (870) 2256849 for more information.

Meetings are held on Monday nights 6:30 8 p.m.

The Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with 61,000 members nationwide, operating a fleet of 550 aircraft. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs

90 percent of continental U.S. inland search

and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually.

Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 26,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet programs. CAP received the World Peace Prize in 2011 and has been performing missions for America for 71 years. CAP also participates in Wreaths across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans.
