Brother 2 Brother students growing and leading at ASU Mid-South

Program promotes leadership, stresses completion of educational opportunities

ASU Mid-South Six members of the local Arkansas State University Mid-South chapter of Brother 2 Brother recently traveled to Tampa, Florida and Atlanta, Georgia to participate in national mentoring summits. Then the team returned home to host their own 2nd annual Men of Color Conference on the ASU Mid-South campus April 13.

Justin Dear, Elijah Johnson, Carlton Peoples, Keenan Stewart, Marquis Woods and Michael Small, along with College advisors and mentors, represented ASU Mid-South while attending the Black, Brown and College Bound Summit in Tampa in March. The group met students from colleges from all over the country and heard motivational presentations from a wide variety of nationally recognized speakers.

Brother 2 Brother advisor and mentor Gerar Pope was a featured speaker during the Southeastern Regional Students of African American Brotherhood Summit (SAAB) in Atlanta in April, presenting “Making the Right Moves,” where he compared classroom and educational strategy, performance and moves to the game of chess. In April, ASU Mid-South campus was the host location as over 60 participants

from Arkansas and Tennessee schools attended the local Men of Color Conference. This year’s theme was “Building Bridges and Creating Change”.

by getting involved and taking on such leadership roles,” said ASU Mid-South Brother 2 Brother advisor, Gerar Pope.

“These kinds of experiences help foster individual growth opportunities and show the students future possibilities that they might not otherwise have exposure to.” About Brother 2 Brother Brother 2 Brother (B2B) is a male mentoring organization established through a Title III PBI Grant at ASU Mid-South Community College. B2B is designed to develop the engagement and self-confidence of (primarily but not limited to) African American male students to increase their success, retention, and completion of college. B2B also strives to improve the educational outcomes of those students through participation, in-service, learning, and civic engagement.

Participants experience a mentoring relationship to follow, uplift, and track their personal and academic development. B2B meets bi-weekly in various locations as announced.
