FCMC to host free program on bone health for women

Free Lunch- n- Learn set for May 22

Forrest City Medical Center FORREST CITY— Osteoporosis used to be considered an inevitable part of aging, especially for women. We now know much more about how to detect, prevent, and treat the disease. In recognition of Women's Health Month, Forrest City Medical Center is presenting a free Lunch-n-Learn program on Bone Health for Women on Tuesday, May 22.

“This is not a program designed for older women only,” says Janet Benson, Marketing Director at Forrest City Medical Center. “Although women age 50 and older are more likely to develop Osteoporosis, the disease can be prevented in many cases when women start becoming more proactive about bone health in their twenties and thirties.”

Angie Vondran, RN and QRMC Officer at Forrest City Medical Center, will discuss the causes and risk factors for Osteoporosis, and will share information on what can be done through diet and exercise to prevent the disease in some cases.

Even after being diagnosed with Osteoporosis it isn't too late to take action, according to Benson. “I was diagnosed with Osteoporosis when I was in my late thirties,” Benson remarked, “but with diet and lifestyle changes, and the right medication, my bone loss has actually been reversed. That's part of the message we want to get to women, that they're never too old or too young to take an active role in the health of their bones.”

Determining whether or not bone loss is an issue is a simple process with the diagnostic equipment in Forrest City Medical Center's Imaging Department. Susan Jameson, Director of Imaging at FCMC, will present information on the process involved with a Bone Density Test, and how to have the test ordered by a physician.

The Bone Health for Women Lunch-n-Learn will be held in FCMC's In-Service Classroom at noon on Tuesday, May 22. There is no charge to attend, but advance registration is required and a light lunch will be served to all registered attendees. To register, visit ForrestCityMedicalCenter.
