Earle to get money to pave city streets

ArDOT grants funds to city for road repairs

Earle has been approved by the state to receive money for some much needed road work.

Mayor Sherman Smith met with officials from Arkansas Department of Transportation this month to look at the city’s streets which are in need of repair. “They came and rode the streets that we proposed to do and took some measurements on them,” Smith said.

Smith said there are about two miles of road that will get paved.

Included on the list are portions of Arkansas Street near South Acres subdivision, South Street, Fourth Street, Rollins Street, and Cartwright Street.

“Those are the worst ones,” Smith said. “They won’t be patches. They will be overlays.” Smith said he was told the state has budgeted $250,000 for the project and will come in and do a two-inch overlay on those streets.

The money comes from the state Street Aid Program which provides funding and engineering assistance to cities and counties to help resurface roads. The program is funded by a one cent sales tax.

Earle last received funding in 2014. The state spent $250,000 and repaved six miles of roads on Alabama, Main, 3rd, 5th, and 6th streets.

“It will probably be 2019 when they actually do that,” Smith said.
