Shelter donation: A warm and fuzzy story

Youngster’s good deed leads to birthday surprise

Andrew Yon is a Marion boy that knows the difference between needs and wants. He told his mom he did not need anything for his birthday but he loves dogs and wanted to help shelter animals. He became enchanted with Siberian Huskies a while back.

“He has been looking at and talking about Siberian Huskies for two years,” said his mom Mandy Barrom.

For his tenth birthday Andrew asked his friends and relatives to skip the toys and give him cash to donate to the Marion Animal Shelter.

“I really did not need anything for my birthday,” said Andrew. “Then I said could we donate to the animal shelter because they really don’t get anything,” Monday after his day at the intermediate school Andrew stopped into the shelter and handed Marion Animal Control Director Gina Austin the proceeds from his birthday collection, a whopping $515.

“Thank you so much, do you know how much that will help us out,” said a grateful Austin. “That’s a lot of money.”

Oh, and remember knowing the difference between needs and wants?

Andrew presented the shelter with an engraved name tag and simply asked if one of the shelter pups could be named Gunner.

Austin led Andrew to meet a dog to name Gunner and took him to the back yard of the shelter. There he found his mom had arranged a surprise, a seven week old blue eyed Siberian Husky puppy called Gunner.

It was love at first sight.

Andrew, the boy that knows the difference between need and wants, got something he wanted anyway. Happy Birthday Andrew.
