Keeping an eye toward the Future

In the upcoming session, legislators will be asked to consider a proposal by Governor Hutchinson would could provide an opportunity for high school graduates.

Recently, the Governor announced details of a proposal he is calling Arkansas Future Grant (ArFuture Grant). The grant would provide two years of tuition and fees for any Arkansas community or technical college to any student who enrolls in a high demand field of study, such as computer science.

There is a catch. In an effort to keep our best and brightest contributing to our economy, the grant would require the recipient to work in Arkansas the first three years following their graduation. If the student does not complete his or her commitment, the grant would be converted to a loan for repayment.

To ensure success, recipients would be required to meet monthly with a program mentor. Prospective students must also apply for the Pell Grant. The Arkansas Future Grant would cover any cost after the lottery scholarship, Pell Grant, or another financial aid.

There would not be a grade point average requirement.

The Governor has stated this will not require new revenue. The plan would repurpose funds from existing grants.

If passed the grant would be available by the next school year. It would be available under a first come first serve basis.

There are several more education proposals being discussed. Legislation has also been filed to restructure the lottery scholarship.

I will continue to update you throughout the session on the proposed changes.
